Carla and Crappy Show: The Make It Ring Edition
It's Week 3 of the college football season, and with Group of Five teams stealing the spotlight, that can only mean one thing: It's time for our annual Lightning Round show. (Yes, be prepared. There's an occasional bell. And it's loud.)
Joining us "in-studio" for the first time this year is our #GroupOfFiveAfterDark correspondent, AJ, who promptly celebrates the Fun Belt's rise to the occasion last weekend. We also tip our glasses to Houston Baptist (not a high school) and explore the beauty of Army's ... defense? Let's send everyone to the Bahamas Bowl! We have no idea.
We recorded this show late Tuesday, otherwise known as the "night before the Big Ten decided to come back." While we may not have ideas about much this season, we definitely have opinions about this, so we share them ... even before the season reboot was official.
And then, we get down to business, Gong Show-style, bell partially included. Ready, set ...
Tulsa at No. 11 Oklahoma State (Noon ET, ESPN): The Big 12 was underwhelming last week. Tulsa has an entire fleet of running backs. This should be fun, if you like offense.
Houston at Baylor (Big Nude Saturday, FOX): Say it with us — we have no idea. Baylor's got a new coach; Houston underperformed in 2019 under Holgo.
USF at No. 7 Notre Dame (2:30 ET, USA): The Irish started slow last week. USF runs the football a whole lot. Also, this game's on USA?
No. 14 UCF at Georgia Tech (3:30 ET, ABC): This should be a fun battle between two young, rising quarterbacks. Is GT for real? Will UCF be a contender?
No. 23 Appalachian State at Marshall (3:30 ET, CBS): A much-deserved time in the CBS spotlight for these two teams. Appy State runs the ball. Marshall throws the ball. Both teams are solid in the trenches.
No. 17 Miami at No. 18 Louisville (7:30 ET, ABC): Our first Top 25 matchup of the year ... boasts a statistical mismatch that looms large. Louisville had more than 300 yards in the air last weekend. Miami's defense has secondary issues. Hmm.
Honorable mentions this week go to Troy at MTSU (a trophy game!) and Abilene Christian (also not a high school) at UTEP (a true #AfterDark game). And with all of that ... whew! Enjoy the football, yinz guys. Ding!
